NVART3: Design Fusion WINNERS
Design Fusion challenged entrants to create a fusion of 2D and 3D design.

This challenging topic stretched contestants beyond their normal bounds by calling for the synergy of 2D and 3D elements to create something much greater than the parts alone. This effective tripling of the design effort did not deter the entrants – in fact it has spurred them to great heights.

Judges
CGSociety gathered together an awesome bunch of industry luminaries to judge the many entries. Each judge voted and gave their appraisal, some comments are included here for all to see.

In the panel, we had Lorne Lanning, the Co founder / President / Creative Director of Oddworld Inhabitants; Stephan Martiniere, concept artist and Creative Visual Director at Midway Games; Stephen Stahlberg, founder of Android Blues and Lead Artist at Ignition Studios; Pascal Blanché, Concept artist and Art director at Ubisoft; David Wright, Creative Director at NVIDIA; and Mark Snoswell, President of CGSociety.org.
First Prize

Heiko creates most of his designs in his free time after work or on weekends. Working in a little design agency in Cologne, his daily projects are more the ‘classical advertising thing’. He creativity extends to some photography, 3ds Max and Photoshop.

“My girlfriend is also a big inspiration to me,” says Heiko. “I think inspiration can be everywhere, you just need to look closer. For the Fusion piece, I shaped the 3D shapes in Max and placed them in Photoshop. I wanted a clean line between the 2D and 3D but overall it should fuse together. I like to place very massive and static elements and bring them into a flow. A friend told me about the Design Fusion competition because I almost use 2D and 3D elements in my work. Judges comments:
Heiko Klug's Fusion is an outstanding blend of 2D and 3D design. Taking its inspiration from contemporary street art It's 2D design is both bold and refined - striking at any resolution. The 3D elements echo an architectural motif and spring from the page with ever increasing impact as you zoom the picture up.  Together the 2D and 3D designs complement each other perfectly. The image goes further and also exhibits the subtlety of Japanese print in the marriage of simple graphic forms as a setting for the central urban fusion. All in all this is one very cool image – certainly a modern masterpiece.

Second Prize
‘Cock and the centipede’ by Jason Lynch, (lynch), BARBADOS

The inspiration for cock and the centipede came in two forms. The cock was purely by accident, so the artist tells us, sort of a work in progress that Jason says he was making up as he went along.

The Centipede however came out of a recently developed phobia of these creatures. “A few months ago I moved to a village where there were lots of centipedes. These things were literally everywhere,” says Jason. “The kitchen, the bedroom, they were even coming out of the drain in the shower. I’ve been bitten at least three times, even during the Design Fusion challenge. So I thought I’d turn my misfortune into a cool concept. I figured this might work well with the cock as a rival. Now being from the Caribbean these are things you will grow up seeing.”

Jason used ZBrush to begin the centipede’s body. He wanted to keep the 2D & 3D blend in this creature as well so instead of modelling everything, he returned to Photoshop to create vector shapes for the legs, to paint the head and that tiny squiggle to represent its venomous aura. “I tried my most to keep this design as minimal as possible but at the same time interesting,” he says.

Third Prize
‘When Tlalli calls you’ by Carlos Ortega Elizalde, (stroggtank), MEXICO

By his own admission, Carlos’ computer was an average system. He has worked as a graphic designer and 3D artist for about four years, working for the media department in his hometown’s university.

The title DesignFusion was enough to get him interested in the competition. “The inspiration came from the day I was taking a ride on my bicycle and was near the place where I buried a pet, a turtle named "Tlalli", which means "Earth" in the Nahuatl dialect,” Carlos explains.

“It was fun to take two of my biggest passions in one project, and also learn from the other competitors and see the main title though the eyes of many artists from other countries,” he says.
