  Who is Jose Oli?

Tina. She is young, she's a little crazy, and she has the control. She is the founder of a group like the people who release the garden dwarves, but she prefers the giant steam robots! Wake up people! It's time to change the rules!

A superbly wrought image like Wake Up Baby!! deserves a special place on CGNetworks. Leigh Van Der Byl interviewed the master of this painting, Jose Oli, to find out more about it and try to understand why it's captured the imagination of so many CGTalkers!

Tell us the story of Tina and image itself. Why did you choose to depict this?

The Origin of “Wake Up, Baby!!“
At daybreak, I go for a walk with my dog, Loky. We used to pass by an industrial zone with old, large industrial factories. Out of dirty and broken windows I would see flashes of light from electric welding. Those strange lightings create weird, distorted shadows which woke my imagination. I used to wonder myself: What kinds of thing are being constructed into those factories? The answer was obvious: GIANT ROBOTS! In that realization were the seeds of this image. I planned to draw an illustration with a giant robot coming out or breaking an old industrial assembly factory, but something more was needed – a story, a look... Then the idea of the robbery of this giant robot surfaced in me, and consequently a story... This is the story of Tina and her subversive organization: WAKE UP BABY!!

Tina's story
Tina is very much a crazy girl, with a deep knowledge of programming and electronics – not to mention a real fan of “2001: A Space Odyssey” (or more concretely, of Hal). She lives trapped in a little industrial town in an realistic world (sourced from my imagination). In this alternative reality, giant steam robots are constructed. These mechanical giants are used for working on large construction projects and doing heavy tasks. Certainly, they don't have their own autonomy and are directed by means of a remote control. They don't have an artificial intelligence either. Or do they? Well, not everybody is convinced. Tina believes it's her obligation to release these marvelous creatures from their oppressors, as machines are the most faithful companion of this ‘outlaw hacker girl’. She is the founder of the organization for the freedom of the working robots, called Wake Up Baby, composed of just a small number of people. She also makes of her own remote controls, with which she releases their ‘friends’. In Tina's world, giant robots can be found nowadays, abandoned on their favorite places, the cliffs (according to them), covered by moss, rust and lichens, and looking beyond the sea through their big beacon-eye.
