Title: Blush Response, Alien Adoption
Notes:
"The most unlikely of companions" would be an apt description, but it would be a profound understatement as well. And to imagine this little one being announced before the community as a new member of ones family? Given today's political realities?! Unimaginable! Yet who could not at least acknowledge the affection, so genuine, between this mother and her adopted son? Perhaps the elders will find an exception could be made.

Title: Lighting/Background
Notes:
Firstly, thanks for your all your kind feedback and the good suggestions! I'm REALLY enjoying this challenge. Ok, more experimentation. I am pretty happy with the way this is shaping. I need to develop things further but will probably keep a long lens on the background (soft focus). The environment is necessary to tell the story but still secondary to the characters in this case. More detailing of the alien should help draw appropriate attention as well. Keep it up guys!

Title: Scene
Notes:
Experimenting with lighting and environment for the characters. Keeping it a little rough. I'll take a break for now and see if I'm happy with this direction in the morning.

Title: The Boy
Notes:
Now a little attention given to the alien hands and the boy. Things are starting to get there. Thank you for all the encouragement and feedback, guys. It REALLY helps! How does the saying go? "Objectivity for your own work decreases geometrically in relationship to the time you spend working on it."

Title: Alien Face
Notes:
An update of my progress so far. The reality of the impending deadline is beginning to sink in, so I hope to make some strides this week. I've really been enjoying this project so far. Good luck everyone!

Title: Initial Painting
Notes:
Working through my lighting and color considerations (in Photoshop). I often use a layer for writing down any ideas I have as I paint. I find it helpful for get back up-to-speed when returning the next day.

Title: Value Study
Notes:
Some quick value studies before jumping in to primary painting. I maintain a limit of five shades of gray. Okay. Think I better take a break and come back with fresh eyes before making a choice. Then on to some painting!

Title: Line Art
Notes:
A thumbnail selected to develop further as a line drawing using Painter.

I decided to rotate the alien character somewhat in effort to engage the viewer. Seems like an improvement. I like the apparent intimacy between the characters at this stage. Do we see a Mother and child waiting for Father's return at a space port? Or maybe an alien nanny telling "one last bedtime story" about her home planet?

Title: Thumbnail Sketches
Notes:
Here are some initial thumbnails sketched in Painter.

I spent a little time brainstorming and listing some possible directions. The concepts that jumped out at me most involved closer relationships between a human and an alien. Near the top of the list was the relationship of a young child and an adult alien.
