Title: Scylla attacks Odysseus' ship
Notes:
Scylla was once a beautiful nymph, but was turned into a hideous sea monster by the witch Circe.
According the Homer's 'The Odyssey', the monster has six heads, each with three rows of razor sharp teeth. She lives in a cave high above a narrow straight of water, opposite the whirlpool 'Charybdis'. Any boats who wished to pass through the narrows would have to sail close to one or other of these dangers - the monster or the whirlpool.
On the way back from the Trojan war, Odysseus and his men had to pass through this straight, and chose to risk Scylla (and lose six men) over the whirlpool (and potentially lose the entire ship).

Software used:

Google Sketchup Pro
Painter
Photoshop

Title: Painting work in progress
Notes:
Starting to paint in the primary elements. Still to figure out where the soldiers on deck are going to go, and a whole lot of detail, haze, smoke and vfx to add.

Title: Scylla attacks the Odyssey - Sketchup previs
Notes:
As usual when I've got time to really work up an image, I've done a rough pre-vis in 'SketchUp' to lock down my composition.
I'm going to paint over this, so a lot of the fine details will be decided then.
Thanks to '3D warehouse' for the placeholder man model, and parts of the ballista on the prow.

Title: Scylla attacks Odysseus' ship
Notes:
From 'The Odyssey' - Odysseus and his crew pass through a narrow straight between high cliffs on their way back from the Trojan war.

On one side of the straight is the whirlpool 'Charybdis', and in a cave on the opposite cliff lives the six headed sea monster 'Scylla'.
