Entries in this category will also be automatically eligible for the Matte Painting Open Category. Individual Video team members who have created matte paintings for their films should enter their matte paintings separately in this category.

Video:
Videos can show any exploration of gears, springs, brass and steam set around some of the world's best known stories. However we strongly recommend that you create a film trailer. The reason is that a film trailer allows a wider range of styles than any other format while focusing on impact. As a film trailer you have a wide choice from lots of narrative and story content to just having flashes of iconic images - as is the style of many modern film trailers. Film trailers also give your entry a prestige that comes from being associated with “film”. This is highly relevant in today’s media environment where “video” has become synonymous with low quality (poor technical and content) home video on the web.

Integration of live action is encouraged but not essential. We will initially judge a 30 second commercial that you must provide from your full length video (30 - 90 Sec). It’s normal that 30 and 60 second versions will be cut from the full length videos. The 30 second version would get most exposure on TV in a normal 30 second commercial slot. This also makes it easier to judge lots of entries in a fair manner for both judges and entrants.

Your full length video/film trailer should be punchy and short. You need to get the message over in as short a time as possible. The most common mistake made in video/film competitions is entries that are too long and boring. This is another reason for focusing on the film trailer format where the prime outcome is that people will go “Wow! That looks fantastic, I want to see the film”, no matter how short the trailer is. We do not enforce a maximum length for the full length video but we strongly encourage you to keep to within 90 sec - 3 min. Quality is far more important than length.

Finally - please remember to add a making of video for the skills awards you wish to be considered for. If you do this the length of the making of video must be less than 90 sec.

* Individuals in the Image category may enter a video to show off special features when being considered for an award (eg, turntable for the Modeling award).

** Video entries (whether team or individual) wishing to be considered for an award(s) are encouraged to show off the skill(s) in a silent (no dialogue – background music is OK) ‘making of’ documentary immediately after their closing credits. There is a maximum of 90 seconds allowed for this in addition to the Video.


Modeling
This award will be judged on modeling skill alone, however contestants are encouraged to show off their models in the best possible manner. Phong, white or grey shaders with ambient occlusion are recommended. In addition to turntable, cuts to close up shots showing modeling detail are also recommended.

Texturing
Entrants are encouraged to show off UV mapping and texture details. Interaction with light and final render quality are also very important factors in this award.

Animation
Consideration will be given to both technical skill and artistic results.

Lighting
Most important is the manner in which the lighting enhances the overall impact of the story… this includes focusing the attention on the main characters, setting mood and atmosphere.
