Wip |
| Notes: |
So, this is the present state of my image. I've thought rapidly about a schedule for the next 5 days. If all goes well, I would like to have finished the details and characters for monday, and take the rest of the time for setting the color and contrast, and working on special effects (haven't think a lot about this part yet). I'm presently stucked on the hunter in the background... I'm quite not sure about the position. Well, I think I'm gonna cry... :) |

Process |
| Notes: |
Since my last update, I’ve worked principally on the characters. I wanted to get the positions to feel real (who wouldn’t want it for a realistic approach, anyway…O_o) So, I used the best references I could get… i.e. myself!!! O_O The only problem using this trick is that you risk losing the shape of your original character. But for here, my skinny body has served me well… ahum… So, I’ve painted the characters using these pictures of me playing the hunter with a dictionary. Also, during the week-end, I’ve added details on the background, and I’ve tried to redesign stuff that were quite foggy on the line art. There are things still weird in the image (unbalance stuff on the beast for exemple), but I’ll try to get through it later. For now, I’ll fix all the characters for Friday. I hope… |

Shadows and lights |
| Notes: |
Ok. I can't really figure out for the moment what the final color will be, but I think the position of the lights and the shadows will do for the monent. I have added the underweater part at the bottom but... I like the idea, but I'm not sure yet if it works graphically. The curves and the fragmentaion it creates remind me of an aquarium... I'll see it later. Now, it's time for details!!! |

Quick test color |
| Notes: |
Ok. I haven’t really thought about the ambience that I would like to give to this piece. I always have difficulties when its time to choose a palette. Any suggestions or preferences??? I kind of prefer the blue one in the middle… I’ll sleep on it until week-end. |

Line Art |

| Title: |
Line art |
| Notes: |
I’ve waited to put my previous research until I have done with this line art.
At this step, I use all I have done as references, and I try to make it all work together. It’s time for details! I try also to keep in mind the layout I’ve chosen before, thing I’ve learned to follow carefully (save time if it’s respected). I’ve let myself opened for things that pop up during the execution of the drawing. I kind of like mistakes that work and are not foreseen. I use the line art as guide lines, so it’s not necessary, to my opinion, to have the cleaner sketch in the world. But, it’s certain that the more precise the line art is, the easier it will be to paint. For my part, the funniest part is on the computer. So the faster I’m done with it, the happier I am!
I can now attack the color! 17 days left… Don’t panic!!! ;)

| Title: |
Layout - Composition |
| Notes: |
I’ve decided to create a composition that would be able to tell a story by itself. That’s my goal! So, I have to decide how many characters and creatures would be necessary to understand a little bit better how they live. There will be 2 special hunters, one who will be taking his prey, the second defending the other. I also ask myself where will they put all their preys??? I’ve figured out that a transport or something will accompany them, providing supply and mechanical assistance, if necessary. I’ve try different layouts with all the characters, playing with their shape and their size, trying to make it work together. I’ve put here thumbnails of layouts I’ve made. The precision doesn’t really matter for me at this point. I try to focus on the balance of the shapes, contrast and how the eye of the watcher will tend to move in it. |

Caracter design |
| Notes: |
Ok, that’s probably my final version of the hunter. The four legs maximise his stability and provide him with the capacity to stay a long time still, without losing balance or too much energy. The shape of the legs can be confound with the natural environment, which give him a good camouflage. The spine of the hunter is connected to an organic body (Star wars’ “Yuuzan Vong” style (read the “New Jedi order” for more info)). There’s a special mechanical weapon connected to its abdomen. It’s not working like a gun or anything throwing something. It has been created to suck mater and particules at very high speed and at a precise point. It doesn’t need ammo and can be activated by the user very quickly (like a natural part of the body depending on reaction time). The cylinder of flesh and mater, taken on the target, is sucked by the weapon and pass threw the empty space at the centre of the weapon, without hurting him. The advantage of it is that this technology is a lot more powerful and resistant than any ammo. It is also lightweight compare to missile or rocket, and do a cleaner job (not spreading meat everywhere). It vacuum the hardest mater, whatever it is. The negative points are that it can only be fired in restricted angle and that it take long time for the energy to recharge. If it miss the creature, it gives it the opportunity to kill him.
The pose of the hunter, at the bottom, have been inspired by an anatomic drawing reproduction that was on my wall. I quite like the idea of the hunter taken his prey out of the water, providing his vulnerable back… I begin to have a scene in mind.

References and creatures design |
| Notes: |
I’m trying here to determine what kind of creature the hunter would have to hunt. This step is crucial because the abilities of this creature will determine, in a way, those of the hunter. So, I’ve decided that it will be an amphibian creature or maybe just a fish like creature. It will be also really fast, agile, dangerous, for those who disturb it, and should reflect a kind of intelligence (not just a dumb fish). I also wanted this creature to have an exotic look and to be 100% biologic. It is made of flesh, bones and shells. On his part, the human-hunter will be machine-flesh. The 4 sketches at the bottom have been copied on parts of photos taken on the internet. I’ve mainly searched for fossils and deep sea creatures. |

References |
| Notes: |
Ok. It’s time to comment my work. I hope my english won’t be too bad… ;) Any way, it will be a great practice!!! (think positive)
The first thing I did at the beginning of this project was to determine the function my creature would have to perform. After a while of thinking, I’ve made my mind on a human like creature who would have to hunt/fish in a kind of swamp for his tribe. Next, I’ve searched for informations on anything that concern hunt and swamp. I had more in mind something connected to the world of insect, instead of things concerning lion. I’ve quickly drawn on this page sketches of insects which I use as references. I’ve copied those from the movie “Microcosmos – Le Peuple de l’Herbe”, documentary directed by Claude Nuridsany et Marie Perennou. I’m trying here to precise the main idea of the hunter (which can sound a little bit cliché and also over-used, donù,t you think:). In watching the movie, what has particularly interested me is an insect called in French “patineur”. This carnivorous insect has the ability to walk on the water. What I like most about it is its long legs, which have given me the idea of a waiting hunter placed at an high altitude. The image of the hunter is getting a little bit clearer.
