Final Image |
| Notes: |
Well this is it...well as far as I have time to finish this anyway...my copy of Painter is having scripting errors, so there are a couple of details that I would have liked to finish...but that's life...
I've reworked the boy's face and added a few finishing touches to the fish.
Wish I could have done more but real work has finally got in the way.
Thanks to everyone for all their comments and advice and good luck to all in the voting....roll on the next challenge!!! |

Lighting in progress |
| Notes: |
Well work is manic at the moment, so I hoped to have more details added by now but have not finished....yet.
As such, this will be the final WIP before I post the Completed Image. I hope it's not too dark as all previous post have been a bit faded (so I've toyed with colours in Photoshop).
I've added some lighting rays and tried to enhance shadows.....
Let me know what you think as I still have 3 days to change elements |

Close up details |
| Notes: |
I had a bit of a hectic day at work yesterday, so didn't get much further...
This is a close up of the knife / machine that is used on the fish....
I know this is a nanobot concept, but since you would never see them at this scale, some artistic license is needed....The ongoing story being that this nanokit is the future equivalent of the chemistry set you got when you were a kid. The contraption that fits to the hand sends out magnetic pulses that control the nanobots and how they alter the fishes structure. |

Here's the latest version of my image...
It's a bit too busy so I need to work on colour, light and shadows to add more depth.
Any advice or comments are much appreciated as I've been looking at this for far too long.... |

I've put in the tail area at last and am in the process of completing skin and muscle tissue.
More developments soon I hope... |

Details in progress |
| Notes: |
I managed to spend some time working on detailed areas. This first image shows additions to far right of composition including reworking of the window frame and metal surface of the nanokit.
These are not finished, but just to show developments and convince myself that it will be completed in time... |

Detail work |
| Notes: |
Time is rapidly dissapearing and there is still a lot to do...
Despite work being hectic, I'm managing to start to complete additional details. I've added elements on the right of composition, including the start of packaging for the Nanopet kit (which kids can buy from there local store). The metal textures are taking time as are getting the angles right due to the wide angle perspective.
I hope to have all detail completed within 2-3 days, so I can concentrate on final colours and extras such as shafts of sunlight coming through the window.....panic...better get on |

More work in progress |
| Notes: |
Well I've managed to get a bit further...so here's the latest version.
I've spent some time working on the hand, but even with adjustments to fingers, etc., it seemed too seperate from the rest of the image. I've now added a control device to the hand which helps explain visually the perspective of the hand - and also links the boy more closely with the fish. The wires help lead the eye to the main subject matter.
In addition, I've started to work on the boy's body and altered his eyes slightly.
There is still lots to do and once i'm happy with the overall look, I'll zoom in and work up some of the details that are looking very rough at present.
Thanks for all comments so far which have really helped... |

More alterations |
| Notes: |
The hand has been bugging me all day, so despite being busy at work, I've tried to get rid of the worm like fingers and make it more hand-like in appearance. I'm not used to drawing chidren's hands and this is more tricky than drawing the face.
There's a long way to go and I'll try and post something more finished soon.

Hand update |
| Notes: |
Not had much time to work on this over the last few days, but I managed to sort hand out so it looks like a child's hand (trying to draw a toddlers hand when they won't sit still for a minute is a bit of a challenge!!).
Still unsure whether to include top of composition (not shown here) as it increases feel of perspective and wide angle, but detracts from fish which is central focus for image.
I would also like to add glass containers in foreground through which you can see parts of fish magnified and distorted.
Any feedback would be much appreciated... |

Work in progress - |
| Notes: |
Having added some detail to the fish, I'm now working on the area around the fish.
I've added more blue as the composition seemed a bit busy before.
I have also strated adding water dripping off the lights and work surface.
There is still a lot to do but feedback about whether I'm heading in the right direction or not would be greatly recieved |

Fish - Detail close up |
| Notes: |
This is a section of the fish, showing detail that I am working on. I'm concentrating on merging flesh and metal at the moment, which is beginning to work.
Still a long way to go but things are coming along.
As I'm sat in a dark room on my own whilst doing this, any feedback is welcome (most anyway)

The Transformation stage 2 |
| Notes: |
Here is an update of the last image with some details / block colour added to the fish.
I've added more blue to the background to try and add more depth.
Usually I would sketch all the detail first, but I'm enjoying using Painter which is far more fun than Photoshop in terms of brushes and how they flow.
Still a long way to go, but hopefully I'm more on track.
Any feed back would be welcome... |

Transformation |
| Notes: |
Having managed to sketch my son at the right angle (which is not an easy process!!), here is a development of the sketch with basic elements in place.
There's lots to do still. The whole piece lacks depth and the fish which is the central focus needs working up.
The hand is now slightly to big and also an adults hand (Mine) so needs reworking. |

Rough final composition |
| Notes: |
Having had a break from this due to work getting in the way, I feel I can now tackle this head on. The nain problem has been achieving a composition where the angle is extreme enough to have the fish in as much detail in the foreground with children behind working on the fish.
This is a very quick sketch to help work out angles and to show the composition I would like, is possible.
If I can now get my son to stand still long enough to draw him from floor level looking up, I'll be in business and be able to start on final image... |

The Experiment |
| Notes: |
Here is a very early colour version of the previous sketch.
The detail of the fish and experiment are still to be added.
I am also working on a slightly more dynamic composition where the fish is in the foreground with the scene looking up towards the children from below.
It's a bit manic at work at present, but I hope to have line artwork complete within the next week - if only I could spend all day on this... |

Freak Show |
| Notes: |
Still working out composition for fish idea, so in the meantime, here is an idea that crept into my head at 3am this morning. I only had an hour or so to toy with this concept, but hopefully all you creatives out there can imagine the scenario.
The concept revolves around a victorian style freak show - you know, big top style marquee lit by a future equivalent of gas lamps which have replaced electricity as source of light. Fog, eerie lighting and long shadows partially hide the glass tanks on display, where preserved organisms nof machine and flesh sit in formaldahide.
The ring master / host entices the unwary passer by to discover the delights of the show. A host of weird creatures surround her and try to get you to enter their macabre world.
So I didn't get much sleep last night - hence the strange idea.
I'll probably return to my previous idea now, but let me know your thoughts on this idea. |

Machine initial thoughts |
| Notes: |
Another busy day at work, so I've only had time to work up a few sketches of ideas for machines that attack the fish and rebuild it as a mixture of flesh and metal....
I imagine there will be thousands of these machines changing the structure of the fish before your very eyes, pulling at muscle tissue and welding in areas of metal and synthetic material.
Working on a few more at the moment
More to post soon...all comments (well most anyway) are welcome - it's good to get feedback on development |

The Experiment pt2 |
| Notes: |
oops..forgot to upload line art...will do later...
This is my first attempt at working on lighting and colouring the piece.
I've only just managed to get a copy of painter (and I thought Photoshop ruled..mmm), so progress has been slow, but things are picking up...
The main aim here is to get the atmosphere of the image working. Shadows and low lighting should make the scene more earie.
Most of the detail has been left out, so the next image should give a better idea of muscles and tissue and general structure of the fish (and explain the machineflesh link). |

The Experiment |

This sketch develops lighting and the environment.
The aim is to have lots of gadgets and apparatus in the foreground, casting strange shadows over the room and two children. It still needs to be weirder and creepy but I'm slowly getting there...
There's still a long long way to go.... |

Environment (very rough!!) sketch |
| Notes: |
Bit busy at work today, but here is a quick 10 minute sketch showing the perspective and environment I hope to use.
The idea is that in the future kids will be able to buy kits from their local corner shop containing nanobots / technology. Similar to trading cards, but a lot more fun??
You can add these to a pet or organic lifeform to enhance them. A sort of virtual / real pet that you can take to the playground and fight with a friends creation - or just watch evolve.
Anything is possible...increase intelligence, add weopons, change colour, add limbs, etc.
As soon as the nanobots come into contact with the organic lifeform, they start to work together to change the lifeform before your very eyes.
I hope to work on detail over the next few days, so should have something better soon.
The image depicts a girl and boy working on their pet fish (though creature may change).
Light, shadow and low camera angle should give a atmospheric and slightly sinister feel. |
