Kraken |

One final thing. Since i started submitting late, i went in for the kill with the concept stage. Someone mentioned in my thread, that this was a shame, as it would have been good to see this stage of the development.
As i was tidying up my studio after finishing my final image, i came across my doodles and sketches, that help me arrive at the 'concept' milestone.
It may help to show how i got there.
I don't usually do a huge amount of drawings to get the demon out of my head. I try to nail it very quickly....or the idea goes a bit limp.
Here you go, anyway.
Cheers

Kraken |

Well, here it is. You could work on these things forever, like some sort of see-saw! Getting better/getting worse. You have to call it a day, and trust your instinct.
Machine flesh......concept:
The idea was for some sort of creature that hunted in the ocean (that's why i thought the mythical creature, the Kraken, would suit) The ocean levels have risen, and whatever creature could..... adapted for survival.
The Krakens favourite quarry....us pesky humans!!
The mechanical gills, and lungs allow it to sustain life, and the harpoon is it's weapon of choice. I imagined this creature being in a lot of pain, enduring all of these machine grafts to be more efficient at hunting and killing. The pain is simply the motivation.
Pressure counter connected to the heart informs it if it's going too deap.
'The deep sea scout fish' has been specially adapted to detect human vibration with it's machine graft, that also boosts it's light making qualities.
Helping the 'Kraken' draw us out of our hiding holes.
They aren't it's toys on it's wrist, in a similar way we use bait and lures when we are fishing, it lies in dark areas hoping to attract our attention.
I wouldn't be suckered into it.....................would you?!
Anyway, I've enjoyed doing this.
I've enjoyed other peoples work.....I hope you've enjoyed mine.
Good luck, and congratulations.
Regards

Nearly finished. Just adding final colours and atmosphere....plancton (ish) and bits of bubbles.
It's a funny one knowing when it's finished.....instinct comes into play here. Underdone/overworked.........every artists Nemesis.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks and good luck

Working in details. I'll do this until i feel the creature is finished. I'll then work on the background and foreground.

Kraken |

Like i mentioned earlier, i've started to add the warmth into it.....once i've progressed through the whole thing, i'll then make a decision on the 'hue balance'
I've started to intensify the light around the face (this hopefully, will be the main area of interest)
The light from the fish will be played about with, also. Once i've taking it through this stage, i'll then add all of my 'colour' details.

Kraken |
| Notes: |
I've started to add bubbles and Misc. details. I've lightened the background slightly, as i was starting to lose the various forms in the Kraken. I'll probable pull back on some of the bubbles etc when all of the elements are in. I won't be able to do this until i see everything in there and how they juxtopose with one another. I'll still experiment with the warm/red light coming from the 'fangtooth scout fish' which i haven't attempted yet. If it doesn't work, i'll stick with the whole thing having a cool feel. Rust and various elements to add. Plus there'll be clouds of blood (very subtle) coming from the machinery where it's peirced his skin...........to emphasize his pain and desire to catch his quarry.....one hell of a motivitaion!
I have'nt decided yet, but i may put in some sharks (dark and shadowy....no detail) as if they're following for scraps. Now that they're not the ultimate predator in the oceans anymore....second only to the Kraken.
It looks as if i'll make the deadline.....woohoo! At one point i wasn't sure. I'm back to work on Monday, so i'll have about 8 or 9 hours at night to work on it next week......that should be plenty.
Very pleasing.....i would have been gutted if i couldn't have reached this stage, considering i posted so late.
Thanks to everyone, and good luck.

Just an update on where i'm going with the colour scheme....still lots of tinkering to do.
I've still to add my warmer tones.....but like i mentioned earlier, this piece will mostly be cooler tones.

Kraken |
| Notes: |
I've posted a full shot, so you can start to get a sense of the mood. All i've finished is the first stage i refered to earlier. Basically blocking in the blues....grounding the character to the space behind him. The blue of the background is a placer for now, theres a lot of work to do on it. For example, there'll be an explosion of bubbles behind the main thrusters of his 'water chariot' (just made that up!)
I've also hinted on the way i'll be picking certain areas out with light coming from behind the Kraken.
There's lots of 'busying' to do, in all areas.....the flat colour allows me to define my work areas. Doing it this way, i can stay focused on the piece as a whole, rather than getting obsessed with particular datails. That was taken care of in the pencil drawing!
Colour and overall mood is the goal, now.
Complimenting the character. Making it look as though he belongs there.

Kraken |
| Notes: |
Showing progress regarding the technique i mentioned in my last post. It's quite a nice approach, as you can see, all of the different forms being created, just by painting/masking the background colour out. It gives a quick result by taking away the colour in a reverse way you would apply the surface shadow.
Basically, i'm grading the opacity.
Once i've gone around the piece doing this, i'll intruduce specific colours into the main areas of focus. By applying the afore mentioned technique, it allows me to work out what part of the painting needs more contrast, and vice versa.
While keeping in mind, this creature is deep under water, so he will be blue in a lot of areas, as you're looking at him through water.

Kraken |
| Notes: |
I'm going to post a reel documented WIP for the colouring stage. Similar to the last post, i mentioned i used my pencil drawing as the top layer 'multiply'then i start to add hues underneath (bearing in mind, the pencil work has a huge part to play in this piece)
Rather than painting in all of the deatails, having the pencil line and shading it gives a more earthy look, rather than everything looking too smooth and perfect. The 'blended in' look is fine, but for my tastes, and this piece, i felt it needed a rustic.....old worldly look. (a bit more gritty)
If that makes sense?!!
I then throw a base colour underneath, then i proceed to paint out the areas i want there to be light, using a 'masked' selection in that layer, so i can come back to it, if it needs altering later. For a large part of my work, i'll be creating the base tones in this manner.
I'll then paint on top of the 'pencil multiply layer' at the end. In a very subtle way, to bring things forward.....bubbles/hi-lights etc
Again, like my pencil technique, it can be very labour intensive.....but i believe the end results have more depth.
Just my opinion, of course.
Crits are welcome as usual
Good luck

Kraken |
| Notes: |
Here i go.....firstly, i drop a base colour to get my eye working in the right environment...this case being the ocean. I'm starting on the skin, as this is the main area i intend to hold your eye the longest (all going to plan)
The idea is this area will be bathed in a warm light (haed, arm and chest area) the rest will filter out into similar hues as the surrounding water. Since i've dropped in a blue....i find it easier starting with a mid tone, so everything is easily defined while i work.....but eventually the contrast with the 'Kraken' will not be so sharp.
Just wanted to show i've started....all ideas are welcome, since i missed out on valuable feedback trying to catch up.

Here's my final 'linework' There are bits n' pieces to add, but that will be added with colour.
You will see the environment more as i start to paint, but you can see where i've marked out the cave entrance where he is hunting his quarry. Signs of human life with the babies cradle he's smashing with his hand.
I'm going to explain more about the design and details as i start to colour. That will give me more of an opportunity to post more WIP's.
Not long to go....i'll be posting much more frequently, now.
Good luck to all.

Hi,
I'm working like crazy to get this finished. It's a shame the opportunity to get back into this competition came so late...since i'm having to steam ahead, i feel i'm missing out on constructive crits coming from a fresh perspective.
If i don't push on, i'll miss the deadline.
Quick question to all out there...i can't seem to reduce the image to the required size, without it blurring the image....?
Comments on the piece welcomed as usual.
Good luck to everyone.

Great competition by the way....fantastic concept!
I entered early on, but because of unforeseen circumstances I was unable to submit. I have a little time off work soon, so I'm going to attempt to do everything I originally set out to do in 2 weeks...with a little luck, I should be able to finish it.
Kraken.
My concept is of a creature that has used mechanical grafts, to enable it to hunt under the sea...mech lungs/gills etc
The quarry being humans, who hide from these creatures after the sea levels rose, forcing who could to live underwater.
It should take a couple of days to show more WIP
