i also made some very minor changes to his pose. his weight is shifted a tiny bit, and i played with his left hand.

i think he's a bit more menacing when looking at the camera, but i like that you can see a bit more of the head shape in the first shot.

i think the look i'm going for in the lighting / final render is a sort of posed military portrait. sort of like a photo you might see of a civil war general.

Notes: after modeling different elements of the constume / machinery, i decided those pieces were a bit disjointed and needed to be more tied together.

so i'm going to rethink how the neck and chestplate are done. i'd like to make them a little more ornate and tie them together so that the machine enhancements flow a little better. this sketch is sort of what i'm thinking.
