Title: Underworld
Notes: The devil has seduced another victim. She leads him down the red carpet to her fortress in the underworld as the rest of her victims, ravaged by time, reach out in a futile attempt to escape.

My intentions with this picture were to have a sort of red carpet parody (which isn't very subtle), and I also wanted to break stereotypes about the devil and hell and such. Hell is not so much the eternal flame, but more of just a pitiful sea of filth. The victims enter looking normal, but once they are tossed into the sea, they grow unruly. Their hair grows wildly and their sexuality slowly disappears and they become almost androgenous monsters. I hope you have enjoyed watching this journey develop, it is sort of a terrible new beginning after the end of life.

Title: clean up
Notes: Here's the image after much cleaning up, not sure whether to call it finished or not, I actually am going to work a bit more on his suit and hair I think but other than that, where should I go from here? I'm so reluctant to call this finished (as are several other people here I see) because i feel like it isn't exactly how I want it yet, but the problem is that I don't know what I want. Just let me know what you think, hopefully that'll point me in the right direction. I think I addressed all the issues in the picture that were mentioned thus far, if not/if you have new stuff, PLEASE let me know, only like 1 hour and 55 minutes to go ><

Notes: Ahh time for final crits, I still haven't finished working on the water, but other than that, what needs work? I'll probably post one more update after this before the final, so I want to hear whatever you've got, be brutal, whatever it takes, I need to hear it :D

Title: face flip
Notes: I flipped the image and worked out some issues in the face, then detailed it more. When I flipped the image, I realized that there are several big composition issues, and I have no idea how to fix them. Hopefully I'll come up with something brilliant before this is all over, but there is so little time left >< If you have any ideas, please let me know, the composition hasn't really changed since the last time I posted the full image.

Title: dressesssssss
Notes: Well, I think this is definitely an improvement, even though her dress isn't completed yet. The dress is still lacking some lustre and contrast, but that will come soon. For now I'm going to leave it as-is, and get to work on other parts of the image. What do you think is most important to work on at this point?

Title: tightening the image
Notes: I'm going to be posting some closeup fixes for a few, there are many areas that are really crappy if you get in anywhere near 25+% of the original size (my posts are a little over 10% of size usually). So basically I'm going in and redetailing everything, the entire water area is a mess, and it's the first thing I'm fixing, them I'm going to move on to her dress, areas of the sky, and then whatever else I can find that needs work. But the water will probably take a few days. I have prom tonight, so I have to get ready and such, I'll hopefully continue tomorrow though. Ack, stupid finals next week, really causing an issue in terms of the deadline, but at least I have a picture that's presentable now so it's just a matter of fixing as much as I can now before submitting the final image.

Title: hairline
Notes: ok I fixed the man's hairline, I think it looks better now. Thanks samanthie :D I also made the clouds on the right side a little less bright so it isn't such an abrupt light-dark transition that takes focus away from the center of the image. It's definitely time to start tightening the image, going in at full size and sharpening some of the edges, cleaning up some messy areas, etc.

Title: quick lighting fix
Notes: Here's a bit of a fix on the lighting, not perfect or anything yet but I think it's improved and at least makes a little bit of sense (or at least moreso than before). Not so random anymore I think. I'm afraid the background is too bright or contrasty or something, the sky I mean. Feel free to attack and paintover and whatever you feel like doing with it, I'd REALLY appreciate it at this stage when I have 11 days 18 minutes 45 seconds left! (and counting)

Title: new color arrangement
Notes: I put together a new color arrangement that sort of combines the 3 ideas I had, I tried to take into account the comments that were left regarding the contrast and stuff, hopefully this looks good? I wanted to put some of the warmer colors behind the characters to bring some focus there, even if it was just a hint of it, and I feel like it works out well since that's where the big castle thing is. I also dabbled a bit with the lighting and tried to fix the perspective on the carpet, hopefully these changes have made a difference for the better :) With the lighting, I feel like I don't want the lanterns to be making TOO much of an impact, I feel like lanterns in the soulful evil fog with a fairly illuminated sky wouldn't make that much difference in the lighting of the characters? Or am I wrong in saying that? regardless, I'm going to try a few different things with the lighting and hopefully I can synchronize everything by the weekend.

Title: oh man
Notes: This update is really exciting for me, just because it brings together a lot of loose ends. I'm still extremely unhappy with her dress, but it's a start, and I can work on it more later. An important question though: Is the composition fine as it is, or do I need something to sort of..."frame" the picture? Like, some sort of large trees on the two sides to hover over, but not necessarily that because it might not make sense, but for some reason I'm just a bit unhappy with the composition? Any suggestions? Also, it's time for final detailing I guess, what do you think are the most important things to work on?

Title: hair and work
Notes: Worked a bit on the hair of the characters, redid the composition of the clouds, and made a few face edits too. I also got rid of the veil, since I don't really want a marriage idea exactly. Time to move on to the clothing for a few (plus fixing the anatomy of the guy again), I'd love to hear what you think so far. Also, do you think I should go forward with a sort of mesh-covered dress for the woman (kinda in the shape it is now), or should I go for something more sleek? I am unsure about it, hopefully it'll work out well though. I might do his tux first, then decide what would match better with him. We'll just have to wait and see ;P

Title: all over the place
Notes: Yes, my updates will be all over the place from now until the end of the challenge, just scrambling to finish as much as I can so that I can call it a finished image before the deadline. Working out some odds and ends, and also I started on the sky. I used a few nice looking references to get some nice cloud structure going, and then I also defined the tower in the back a bit. I think I'm going to leave the tower as it is, just sort of blurry, leave it up to the imagination I suppose. I want to give the illusion that it is far in the distance, and yet extremely huge, because, well, look at the lanterns that are far back, and it's even farther. There seems to be a whole "God ray" thing going on, but I suppose this is more of like, hell rays, or maybe just God rays reaching hell. Who knows, I sure don't right now XD

Title: snakesssssssssssss
Notes: I added snakes to the water and also worked on cleaning the water up a bit, I think it might be a little too dark but other than that I'm fairly pleased with the direction this is heading. The water looks a lot "busier" now than it did before, something I felt it was lacking, I feel like it looks more like it's moving and it's full and gross and uck (hopefully). I think I'm going to move on to the sky for a while now, it's the most unfinished part of the picture at this point.

Title: the end is in sight (but the journey is just beginning)
Notes: So ya I hauled ass for the past 2 days so that I could get the picture to a level that's presentable, and so I'm ready to move it into the "final coloring" phase. Obviously much of it is still messy and it needs a LOT of refining, but with the deadline approaching, I had to get to a point where it is no longer showing the sketch, and now I can actually go back and detail it to a nice level. Let me know what you think so far :D

Title: new suit
Notes: Well, I started working on fixing the man's pose, turned him a bit and changed his suit into more of a tux with tails kind of style. Also, I tried to play around with the tail suggestion for the woman's dress, and it wasn't really working because I just....couldn't draw a believeable tail I guess, it just seemed to be laying there, so I thought maybe I'd try a snake? Anyway, I also got rid of the man's horns. Hopefully these are all positive updates!

Title: color tests
Notes: I wanted to try out the colors, see how I wanted things to work. Why the strange color border? Basically, I expanded the canvas and that's what happened xD But no I wanted to leave it like that for now, because I wanted an opinion on whether I should go for the more contrasty colors on the outside or if I should go for the more muted colors (or maybe some sort of combination?) so give me your opinion on that if you can, I'd really appreciate it :) Maybe I'll just blend it in nicely that way there's some hint of bright color on the outside without taking too much focus from the characters. I also like the prospect of backlighting options, so we'll see where this goes. Oh man I really hope I can finish in time ><

Notes: I was having so much trouble with the dress because I was trying to just paint it randomly, so I decided to work out the entire body basically and shade it, then work the dress over it. Notes: Ok well I went back to work on the face and hair and tried to do a little bit of tinting and lighting based on the background that I want to do, but I'm still not sure with it. I'm thinking of having some sort of bright light source in the front (outside the frame of the picture) so the stuff near the front is really brightly lit, and I can have some of the "people" in the water cowering and hiding from the light. Title: face
Notes: I just wanted to give you an idea of what I was thinking for her face, This was inspired by Jade from the show ANTM if anyone watches it, it doesn't look exactly like her or anything but she has the sort of look I was trying to achieve here. I want to convey extreme intensity in the eyes and give her a very sophisticated, beautiful and seductive sort of look. Right now she sort of looks angry though, but knowing me I'll be up all night working on this face til I'm happy with it, that's what happens when I work on a face at such a large scale (this is about 40% size right now), I might upscale it even more later to work on the detailing and such. I really want this face to be able to serve as a stand-alone portrait, because if I choose to go back to the other idea then at least I'll have reason to come back to this one later because I want to complete this idea at some point :) If you have any suggestions, let me know before I go crazy in the wrong direction xD

Title: wth?
Notes: Ya I have no idea where this came from, but this is a completely new idea that I had for the contest, I feel like it's so late to be changing my idea, especially since I've gotten so far with the other, but I still wanted to pose this idea and see what everyone thinks. I'm not going to just scrap the other entry, I still plan to finish it even if it isn't as part of this contest, but basically here is a very poor representation of the other idea that came to me. Basically, it'll be a woman with a man escorting her down a parody of a red carpet, and behind the barriers on the sides will be dead people reaching out, representing the paparazzi, and they will be walking towards the gates of hell. Obviously it's very difficult to make out all this from this crap sketch, but I just wanted to get an opinion before I go anywhere with it whether it is worth it to pursue this idea or if I should just put it aside and continue working on my entry. I feel like my entry might be too..."safe"? So hopefully I can get some advice on what to do from now, assuming I would have enough time to finish, is this picture worth going forward with for this contest?

Title: saturation and lighting
Notes: After a great deal of tweaking the lighting and saturation of the picture, here's what I come up with. I suppose it isn't too much different from before, but I decided that I would make the background sky the most saturated, then make the foreground the least. I don't know how well this works, but I feel that it at least looks more dynamic and deep than before. Hopefully someone will have some insight for me from this point, I really need to get to work on the characters, but I want to get the lighting and saturation to a point whre I am satisfied first so that I don't have to reshade them a hundred times. For now the characters are just place holders in a sense, so I'd love to hear what you think about the rest of the image, as well as the positioning and sizes of the characters by comparison to the rest of the image.

Notes: Everyone has seemed to agree that I needed to work on bringing the house more into focus and detailing it more and such, so here is a start. I basically added windows so that I could add some extra bright light to the house, and also added more lighting and detailing to the surface to make it a little less flat. Hopefully now it won't blend into the back hills and it will define the journey a little bit better. I'll be back to comment on all your entries and respond to comments here a little bit later, for now hopefully you will find this to be an improvement from before :) I'll get to fixing stuff based on the other advice and criticism that I've been getting too, I really do appreciate it from everyone, thanks :)

Title: new lighting again?
Notes: Ok I think I've finally found something I'm more pleased with, this developed with the help of Zephyri's comments, she suggested that I transition from light to dark as you come towards the foreground, and also suggested some other things such as brightening the house and getting rid of the cheery reddish plants in the foreground. I also added some dark tree branches intruding on the space of the canvas, I feel like it adds to the mood hopefully. So here is a comparison image, the old to the new. Which is better? Should I stick with the changes?

Notes: ok I'm not ready to give up the skeleton just yet, I tried to make the lighting more dramatic and fix some stuff up based on crits (obviously not everything yet), and I feel like it is looking better. Still, I can't help but feel that I am not achieving enough contrast in the middleground or something? All the colors are too close in value I feel, I really need some helpful suggestions on that, I don't want to change the composition too much because I'm fairly happy with it, I just want to bring more focus to the characters without sacrificing the colors and such.

I feel like the fact that the path extends into the background makes it look like they have been traveling for a long time, they are supposed to be coming from the house, let me know if this is clear or if you have any ideas how to make the journey come out more. Well, I basically reworked the structure of the background and the foreground (and worked a bit more on the bushes in the middleground, I'll post some closeups later, once I completely finish them). I wanted to add some color to the foreground that would bring more attention to the front of the image and also tie in the characters, so I added some red since it is similar in color the the boy's shirt. I also added some barbed wire fencing and a sign that blend in to the background and look broken down, or at least they will once finished and detailed hopefully. Also, I have yet to repaint the boy and girl, so they look pretty strange right now I think. Hopefully everyone will like the new changes?

Title: lighting?
Notes: I tried to combine #2 and 3 from my three lighting/color schemes from before, but I am still very unsure with it, I'd really appreciate some input if possible, if you have any suggestions please let me know.

Title: more character work
Notes: I decided to work more on the characters for now, starting with the grown up. This is about 25% of the size at which I'm working, you finally get to see some more refined shading and such, still not 100% done but close enough that I don't need to work on him any more until the final detailing. Hopefully I can finish the other two characters by the end of the week.

Title: decisions decisions, choosing colors
Notes: A lot of people have been saying that the colors look nice and such, but I am not 100% satisfied with them, I was trying some variations but I just can't seem to come up with anything I like. The first one I like the mood but it is too dark and lacks the contrast I want, but the other two might be too bright? I'm not sure, please give me your opinion on the colors because I'm really stuck in a rut right now.

Title: character work
Notes: I worked on the characters a bit more, specifically the grownup. I am trying some moodier lighting too, I'm messing around with it right now but can't seem to put anything together that I'm satisfied with, maybe I'll post two versions and ask for an opinion a bit later. I wasn't too happy with the super bright and happy colors from before, but at the same time I don't want the colors to be too dark or unsaturated. I'll try a few things, meanwhile hopefully you'll like the new character more. I promise I'll get to fixing the crits before my next update as well :)

Title: full scene
Notes: After a weekend away, I am back with another update :) I thought I'd post the entire scene as it is now because I think I'm going to repaint the characters as my next step and I want to compare how they look in the end to the entire scene. If you have any remarks before I go back to the characters I would really appreciate them, I want this picture to turn out the best I can make it so I'd love to hear your input.

Title: bushes
Notes: More work on background details, trying to work on this as quickly as I can because I know at the end I'm going to have to redetail everything and synchronize the lighting, in addition to repainting the characters >< Bah I really hope I have enough time for this, I know the month of April is going to be quite busy so I need to really get moving on this. Once again, criticism greatly appreciated (even on previous steps of course), I really need to get this as good as I can.

Title: more background :)
Notes: Well here's my latest progress, I worked on the sky, plus bushes, etc. Thanks so much once again to adonihs, who helped me immensely plus giving me some advice about various parts of the picture as well as some custom brushes. Thanks so much, if anyone else has advice I'd be more than happy to hear it.

Just so that you can see the image as a whole so far, here it is:

Title: texture work 2
Notes: Here are some closeups from the little details I'm working on right now, obviously still rough. If you have any suggestions regarding the technique, I'd love to hear them, I'm really having a lot of trouble with some of these textures right now.

Title: texture work 1
Notes: Well, I tried to work on the guy's proportions as promised, I think that he's definitely better but obviously not perfect yet, I'll revisit that later when I get to retouching the characters. I worked a bit on the texturing, don't know if anything is final yet. If you have any suggestions regarding the technique, please let me know I'd be glad to hear it. I really need to slow down on this picture though, I'm spending way too much time all at once on it. I'll synchronize the lighting later once I decide what I want to do with it. Hopefully it'll all come together soon :)

Title: faces and shading
Notes: While I contemplated what I want in the foreground, I started working on the characters more, and now have a decent base for the shading. I'm not too happy with the girl's and the dad's faces, but I can worry about them later. I still have a lot of work to do obviously. As for the foreground, I was thinking about putting it as some sort of alien ship that's covered in ivy and such, but again I'm not pleased with the idea. Hopefully something brilliant will come to me soon, or someone will suggest something for me.

Title: Which one?
Notes: Which one looks better and should I go with? I'm fairly happy with the new composition, not 100% sure yet, but I'm still not happy with the foreground. I might actually scrap both of these ideas, not sure yet. Let me know which of these two is better, or if you have a third and better idea please let me know :D

Title: boy's face redone
Notes: I reworked the boy's facial features because they were bugging me (and shifted to gray for now, I decided that I want to make everything uniform first then add colors later). I really appreciate feedback/criticism if possible, whether about the face specifically or the concept sketch. I'm going to redo the overall composition of the picture (keeping the same three main characters but just shifting the background around them) so hopefully I'll be able to come up with something that works soon.

Title: three characters cleaned up
Notes: I cleaned up the three main characters in the picture, since I am still unsure about the foreground I decided to define the three main characters, this is all I plan to do in terms of lineart, the rest will all just be painted in. I really would appreciate feedback, please let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions :D

Title: camping trip concept
Notes: Finally I have a concept sketch that I'm fairly happy with, I'm not too sure about the foreground yet, I wanted to make the people sort of carefree and the boy about to fall into the water, but then the foreground look menacing and warlike. I'm sure adding colors will help with that, but I would love some feedback about the composition and such. I was originally thinking maybe some sort of aliens hiding in the trees, this one has some sort of forest natives sort of thing. Let me know if you have any ideas for me I really would appreciate it :D

Title: migration concept
Notes: Ok well I wanted just to give you an idea of the other concept I was toying with, basically it's a young prince and two servants following the migration of butterflies. Obviously this is just the concept sketch, but I am not sure if I should just scrap it at this phase or if it's worth continuing. I feel like my other idea was more powerful emotionally, but I feel like this will give me a chance to work more with moving characters and a dynamic background, and maybe try some things that I haven't done before and really challenge myself. I would love to hear what you think about it.

Title: Color Test
Notes: I tried to put together some colors to see how they would work together, I'm not sure if I'll stick with these colors until the end, but for now I'm going to continue working with them. It might be a few days before I can make another update, probably not again til next weekend. Let me know about the colors though, I am also playing around with a completely different concept, I might just scrap it completely but if it goes anywhere I'll post the concept sketch and see what you think. Thanks for the advice so far :)

Title: window lines
Notes: I decided to change the composition of the picture completely, and here's the lineart I think I will use. I'll put the other characters "in the action" I think, and the woman will be isolated from it. I am still debating the window shape, I might go back to the semicircle, but I feel like it's almost more dramatic having it stretch upward out of the frame of the image? Like I said, I am ambivalent at the moment. Feedback is much appreciated, I want this to turn out successfully :)

Title: Distance
Notes: Well, here is my concept sketch for the first idea I had, I am a bit late to the party I suppose, but I'm glad I have a chance to enter this time around. I think there are going to be other soldiers/warriors/something on the path outside, and he is leaving to join them. I haven't fully decided what I want to do with the interior, but I'm fairly happy with the sketch of the outside. Hopefully I'll have an epiphany soon, if you have any ideas or feedback, please let me know. I'm not sure about the guy's pose yet, that's why he is a scribbly mess still. Hopefully I won't scrap this idea completely, but I'm not sure it really portrays the topic well, I was trying to go for the triple journey, his literal journey, the journey of a new life that is going to begin, and her emotional journey. Let me know what you think :)
