| Title: |
lastminuterun 1 post before final |
| Notes: |
this comission stole me a whole day so i might not finish as clean as i wanted, speedpainting against the timer, 3hours 52 mins left, wich i wont use completely, in 2 hours i'll make my ftp upload to be on the safe side this time. cleanup at 90% just a few more edges to clean and a few more lights to paint, highlights on olmy is next.
compositionwise added some vegetation to the lower right corners axis city scene, added tons of details and 2 more spacesips to bridge the space between fornt scene and far background. i think the added vegetaion helps that part a lot since it now has a true foreground, if that part's missing, you risk all becomes midground and you have no depht at all.
added some ceiling in the lowerleft corners 6th chamber, that tech-pattern the book sais, upper part, red. cyan lights to have a nice shiny ilumination.. some green lights too to ballance the lack of green. worked in cold accents to the thistledown header cuz the book sais its silver, it was way too purple.
a short way to go and painting marathon of now 12 hours goes on... hope you like the post :D c ya when the ftp is done :) |

almost there - cleanup works at 75% |
| Notes: |
first of all bit thanks to walrus for his overpaint, its been a huge help while fixing not finished fixing everything but closer to what i hope to get it.
here's what else i worked at. center scene, wave of destruction ^^ yay knocked it down to moncromatic yellow and destroyed all buildings. now i know how fun the job of a pyrotechnican must be :p.
cityscape- sketched in tons of little buildings. workid in warmer accents into mona's pink to have a better colorharmony with the center.
cleaned up 50% of the ecges yet, and started set values right.
borehole - started detailing it, its an extralayer so i dont bother with painting around it
nameplates - knocked em down a bit, i think they pop less now.
fixlist: jacket folds not there yet, next pass
necks, need more work - still not satisfying.
olmy - needs his final level rendering - higlights not yet done
buildings - textures not yet painted.
volumetrics. upper part needs more clouds - fog
text - needs light fx and cleanup
post effects - all over glow and flare fx will be last pass
almost there and i think 3 days will be nuf to bring it over the finishing line :) if anyone sees stuff that is not in the in my fix list please please feel free to let me know :)
hope you like the update - 90°callengefever, and closing panic |

something in between - contours pass in progress |
| Notes: |
here's what i actually do. i think i quiet much nailed the composition now, and worked on the light. Its time to cleanup the contours - should be finished with that pass tonight -finally. ignore the rapid fall off on lanier, will paint that today as well. illuminated patricia in the library more, ballanced out mainlights and rimlights in a red/cyan colormix.
sketched in the borehole to the background since i think that is framing the upper scene nicely.
also added some fog and clouds in the upper area. railbridges on the left side that lead into the piece
snow in the sixth chamber lower left corner.
cleanup in progress :) any c&c most welecome ^^ |

patricia revisited - lightsetup unified |
| Notes: |
major update on patricia
this morning, i was bothered so much with patricia i have changed her pose again and unified her light with laniers wich i think works better now :). also repainted her nose that was off trough 3 times reposing.
now lanier and patricia are in the same kind of light wich actually makes it more calm, my piece still is on the busy side but i slowly get there. 6 days to go and comissionwork almost is finished wich means i can get back to this this evening :) yay! |

thoughts on grids and composition |
| Notes: |
rofl ok i decieded to give the poster a shot. there's been so much that was off and i tarted put it back into perspective before the final rendering.
its not a shame to make a grid to get things back into perspective, and what i done was very simple.
I wanted to have a lense effect so i had to figure out how to do it. i took those lines i thought were facing mainly right as guideline, then made a bow matching the curvature best and blended it down to the horizonline. since the piece is built with a centerperspective, the rest was done fast. now that i have a (rather fancy) 3 point perspective grid the rest is painted back into perspective much faster :)
i hope you like the compositionupdate, i found the background in the upper part way too empty and painted 2 buildings into the midground. also i added a brighter space to lanier and flipped lanier and olmy for the storywise reason. lanier: representative of the past, olmy the future, for me, its more logical he is over axis city. and lanier over the sixth chamber wich represents for me the heart of the stone and makes all technological miracles on it possible. mirsky and patricia back to back as for their ways are as different as thinkable, mirski moved right, he'll travel to the end of time while patricia tries to change the past, and ends up in an other universe... i think the new placement makes so far more sense. working on the details now, hope you like my decicion to finish this on :) all c&c most welcome :) |

ok, my purple friend made me paint this purple draft, following the walrusian advice i went back to the very beginning of my sketches and tried to get that spirit back.
now this is version4, i know but based on the very beginning, i think i'll stick with this one finally, its much more simple but basically i have back what i lost during this challenge, the feel for the piece. let me know please what you think :) |

erm colorvariation layout3 - darker version |
| Notes: |
ok, just wanted to have tested that too.
I agree with mike in prolly all points mentioned. i mainly sketched in the new sixth chamber. then for onkmer, olmy's fav. frant. behind mirsky now the walls of books of the library. to avoid broken neck confusion again i sketched in a quick olmy.
yet i am still unsure if i'd stick with this but i like the new sixth chamber somehow. i think its the challengefever, i had way too little sleep the last days and started disliking all i do. i agree with mike the fog was a bit overdone. killed the foglayer for this test.
for this solution, the text is nessesary, to create the whole image. i made it part of the library's interface.
since i wanted to create a movieposter style image, i tried my best to let the text not just being placed on the image rather than being part of it and i thought making it part of the interface would be a possebilety do melt it into it. what do you think about this version? |

now i'd be very very thankful for feedbacks since this is a very hard decision. i played around with my composition in the last 2 days basically cuz i was unhappy because it looked very static. i think i found the final composition nnow, might change things on the colors but mainly am happier with the feel of it. stick with it? pleas let me know if this works. |

| Notes: |
fineworks on the portraits started, also tried to bring in more expression to the characters. the curiousity of mirsky, a touch of sadness to patricia, determination to olmy, and same for lanier...
as for the details, added many many to the lower right corner yet, and some more to come - basically tons of detailing ahead, but start getting happy with the way it takes. as i decieded to not overpolish the piece, i'll try keep much of the painterly feel it has and will try to keep the detailing focussed :)

fogpass - putting values where they belong |
| Notes: |
ok, started on some volumetrics, and yay, love my cloudbrush for doin this
mainly tinted the whole piece slightly purple and then colordoged out some highlights, then copied the whole piece to a new laye and started hardlight the whole scene to get the values right. after some speak with Walrus (thanks mate, helpful as usual) i actually let many parts simply drop to the background. now more detail brushups, at least i could unify the piece now, abd te tweaks brought the characters strongly forward as well.

detailing - valuetweaking - rendering |
| Notes: |
left side: added tons and tons of details i am rendering right now. added a trainstation in the sixth chamber right behind the ramp of the road and boosted the valuefalloff.
right side, just some sketched in not yet rendered elements, like lakesm more buildings, pushed up the cliff line i flipped the spaceship with its tail to the viewer to poit INTO the pieceand put it into the foreground.
header set the perspective right of the bowstructure and set right the main values - leftside started light some of the buildings, just a draft version.
knocked the portraits more out from their surroundings also let the stones emitting light interact with the hair, sketchy yet but i think the things look better if hey interact with each other.
well hope you like the update, more work on the detailing as soon there's some visable progress. :) |

protraitsteps1 - and olmy revisited |
| Notes: |
ok, olmy has changed much, and that has a reason. he probably was the character for me to read. there's much politics, always when his parts of the journey run, so in "eternity" my picture of him has changed much. instead of the slick political activist, i started seing him different. ex-cop, sharpminded ex-soldier, still taking more risk than its smart, a true ruffneck an straight forward. so i gave him eaglelike features, sharp, bowed nose, more weathered and plan giving him grey sides on his hair. as for lanier, i tried make him attractive, since all girls get a crush on him on the stone. so i tried making him a tired looking but attractive man around 35, and as for mirsky, he's at the end a cery curious man, reasonable, so i tried to make him less agressive, smarter, layed weight on an intelligent look. step 1 on portrait refinements done, more refinements after sleep. :) all c&c most welcome, as usual. |

impact - the Angel of death |
| Notes: |
just a screenshot of the centerscene - death. atualy wanted to bring in a few emotional feels i had when i pictured ppl facing the end of all they know, so gave it kind of a religious touch. a mother, covering her child, a business man"forgive me father for i have sinned" a hummer crashing with a mercedes - and up in the sky wing like rays around the mushroomcloud like spread wings hidden - nothing is dearer than life as you shall remember when the amgel of death on the brink of a final strik is upon you.
Ok, thats the basic plan when painting the center. I might add more symbolic elements but mainblocking in center done now as well :) |

rendering step1 - tighten composition in depht and some portraitworks |
| Notes: |
ok, now that i have most elements where i want em to, i started blocking in the upper left part working on values in the left lower part, started rendering laniers and mirkys portraits and thought i make a little between post. whats new: upper left corner, little bit of thistledowns architecture, buildings on wires. next to lanier, a few buildings, not decieded yet on the city.
value update on the sith chamber, started bringing out the details of the fog such as the energy coupling converter controlstation towards the image center, the elvator cranes. i am quiet pleased with the compositionupdate in that section, now tons of details have to be painted.
posted a larger preview this time so you can see where i put in work more clearly. hope you like the little post - all c&c most welcome :) |

more typography |
| Notes: |
thanks all for the great support, much appreciated.
since most of you liked 1 or 4, the center titleintegration, i made 4 more versions:
1a - trying Ivy00's alternative version of the typosplit, thouthe tile is bigger that way, the letters over the lower scenes takes a bit much away from the backgroundscenes. thanks anyways for that sugestion Linda :)
1b - Greatto edit 1 based on the doubletri, resized the title sighly to medium, simpleblocks the easiest readable most classical solution
4a - Greatto edit 2, same layout for title4 - tonsa thanks timur ^^ was the hidden triangle so easy to discover? ^^
4b - curved version of 4's 3d title, a version i tried before and thought i could take it up again to ask you what you think.
thanks a lot for your support, please tell me what of those works best for you. the vote goes on :) |

typo again |
| Notes: |
since this is an important decicion for me (i kept parts rough by purpose before i get to this) i mate thumbs with title and and composition to make this more readable.
now please letme know what works best for you.
1 placed in upper quarter, center simple
2 layed into perspective, right side beam trough o
3 layed into perspective, russin spaceships fly along the letters
4 center layed into perspective spaceships passing through
this is the last step before i start the rendering of the details. kept the layout rough to not be upset to move or redo parts of the sketches. so here is where the serious part starts.
the vote is open :) |

more tweaks, more sculpting and a warm colorpass |
| Notes: |
i agree with rami the specular highlights were too strong in certain areas. toned down a few parts, also corrected midtones to a softer range.
added the first warmcolorpass, and the fun goes on. next pass :) |

patricia - tweaks plus highlight pass |
| Notes: |
k here's what i done. he eyes area has te sharpest contours along with nosetip and lipboardes they get sharp highlights paintes in screen mode. eyes rebounce light and have gem properties in the refraction area, litten the iris on the oposite side of the specular highlight with colordoge.
as for skin, adding s light bit of a more sturated area to the cheeks and around the nosetip ads a nice rosy touch. shadowpass and final highlights follow later, basic sculpting done 80% :)
hope those points help the one or the other :) |

linearts - step1.5 |
| Notes: |
k, here's what i usually do not do on any other comission work, linearts usually are just rough blox in my case. i made a quick pencil session on a a light print and put it all together, the piece stats here.
some may ask, what were those sketches for? lol, i will mat a trailer, all sketches i made will be used as as refs now for the 3d project, and ... yeah but my mainfocus is to finish this. trailer if extratime. the poster fun starts :) hope you like the layout, paintingbase ready to go :) |

the red armada leaving earthorbit |
| Notes: |
the heavy cargo fleet heads towards the asteroid, the scene is inspired by landing and dropships, but basically serves the shipdesign itself. An essential functional design, brachial power. was fun to play russian spacecraft engeneer, the invasion has began :) |

tuberider doodle |
| Notes: |
just a design sketch for the tuberider, sorry the shodly quality, simply wanted to have it down for initial sketching.
if i got it right its a hybrid air/spacecraft of helicopter, spaceship and airplaine, so i thought the rotatable engines on the side should work as giving it all properties it takes to let it navigate limitless.
more sketches later today :) |

spacekitty - girl thoughts in detail |
| Notes: |
short analysis how i got there
what causes the impression of a catlike face?
first of all i think a cat has high cheekbonse and curved up, almondshaped eyes, but also, its a button nose.
as for Patricia, it was clear for me in the beginning, a 23 years ofld fragile girl has a medium wive smooth face, and since she went trough a tragedy, a slightly sad expression. but also determination, wich basically led me to the character i created.
well the difference in jaw makes much of between a tiger and a fawn, lets see:
a tigress can kick your butt easily, but that wouldnt have fitted, as well as bambifawn in space, so i went for something in between.
a high forehead usually is a typical cliché for intelligent humans, but also, a childlike feature, so it simply has offered.
as for the nose, i gae her a slightly pointy nose, agressive shaped nosetip, cuz i like that, perky ^^. well, a nose is a very underestimated feature, it makes very much of a humans characters face. as for noses grow with age, i gave her a small nose oc fourse, she's 23^^.
as for her lips, yeah, they are puffy, but not as puffy as my usual girls look like. as for her eyebrows, i went for an agressive angled shape cuz that helps with determination, but thats another thing.
her neck, speaking of fragilety, i chose to give her a relatively thin neck wich helps the feel for a fragile girl...
as for the type of girl looking a but sterotypistic, i paint cute young girls that way, i simply saw her like that, when i read the book and a more detailed semiprofile shot is next on the scedule. here's a bit hiw the faceanalysis was developped. :) |
