Your Mission

EON - Worlds Within Worlds

For the very first time the CGSociety introduces one of the world’s best writers to the digital artist community in the first CGChallenge to focus on one of the most successful science fiction novels of all time.

Your challenge is to create material for the promotion of a (potential) blockbuster film based on EON, a novel by the world famous writer Greg Bear. With three categories, Illustration, 3D Scene and Film Trailer this is your opportunity to put great words into great pictures in 2D, 3D or video format.

Having sold thousands of copies, EON has not yet been visualized for the screen. In this challenge you get to play at being a creative genius behind the visual interpretation of what could be a blockbuster film by dreaming up ways to best portray the story. Your challenge is to convey maximum impact and engagement with the viewer.

Your work will be judged by the author himself. Greg is one of the world's leading science fiction writers credited with over 30 best selling titles. He has given the CGSociety permission to theme the challenge around his best selling novel 'EON'

Greg Bear will be joined by fellow writer David Brin (STARTIDE RISING, THE KILN PEOPLE, STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION: FORGIVENESS) to assist with the judging for this challenge. Greg and David, both world famous SF writers, are at the top of their field and thrilled to be associated with this challenge and with the CGSociety after seeing the world class art created here.

This challenge elevates the profile of entrants and the CGSociety in general. We are thrilled and humbled to welcome Greg and David to the CGChallenge world.

The EON CGChallenge will award prizes in three categories:
  • Illustration - (any method – 2D or 3D).
  • 3D scene - Still and 4-8 second renders.
  • Film Trailer - A 30 – 90 second trailer for EON.

The Illustration and Render categories are for Individual entrants only. The Trailer category is open to both individuals and teams.

Story is the primary component that will be awarded highest weighting in all judging. The emotive impact and implication of “story behind the image” is the aspect that is most important. Your work must capture the imagination of the viewer and draw them in without relying on any prior knowledge of the story.

Illustration:
This can be created with any tools you like - 2D & 3D.

3D Scene:
Your final entry requires a still image plus a 4 - 8 second animation of your completed scene (not just a model). Your animation can be as subtle as a slight camera rock or pull in, a lighting change, a subtle animation - anything that demonstrates a 3D nature of the work.

Film Trailer:
For this new category the story is king. The minimum requirement can be as simple as a polished story board (slide show) with voice over, sound effects and music or you can produce a full blown film trailer (live action &/or 3D). However the judging will be based on overall story impact not necessarily production quality; the viewer should be left feeling “that’s awesome - I want to see more”.


How the Challenge will be Run

This challenge will be a WIP (Work in Progress) Challenge to ensure everyone can learn from each other, offer feedback and critiques. Each challenger or team is required to submit Work In Progress (WIP) images.

  1. Enter the Challenge by registering yourself as a CGTalk or CSociety member

  2. Submit your Work In Progress on a regular basis.

  3. Participate in the Community by critiquing other challenger's works in the respective forums.

  4. Submit your final entry before the end of the challenge (avoid the last-minute rush - get your entry in early).

  5. Submit Work In Progress images, obtain feedback and give feedback to other challengers in the WIP challenge. Note: Failure to do so may result in penalties during final judging. Community interaction is a must!

  6. All winners are required to write 'making of' articles accompanied with high-resolution Work In Progress stills, to be eligible for prizes. Note: This is a requirement of the Work-In-Progress challenge.
Teams
Teams can be comprised of any number of members (we recommend four participants). Each Team must nominate a Team Leader who will be responsible for posting WIP, and who will be the principal contact for all correspondence between the team, its members and Ballistic Media. The Team Leader will also be responsible for the allocation and distribution of prizes between members of their team should they win. We recommend that prize allocations be prearranged and agreed upon before the team enters.

Ballistic Media will
not become involved in the resolution of any team member disputes and will not hesitate in disqualifying teams that disagree amongst themselves. All team members must be registered with CGTalk and must be credited on the team's entry. An individual cannot participate in more than one team.

Teams may be comprised of individuals working in commercial environments. However, material in commercial production cannot be entered in the challenge.

We have setup a 'Looking for Groups' thread to assist entrants who wish to set up or join teams.


Deliverables

All Entrants are required to submit images for the following milestones:

Illustration:
• Concept Sketch or 3D pre-visualization - JPG (online)
• Line Art or Model - JPG (online)
• Original color pass or textured and lit model - JPG (online)
• Final composite and colour timing.
• Final Image - JPG (online) &
• Print resolution still - TIF (FTP)

3D scene:
• Concept Sketch or 3D pre-visualization - JPG (online)
• Modeling - JPG (online)
• Shading (Textured and lit) - JPG (online)
• Post Effects and Compositing - JPG (online)
• Final Render - JPG (online) &
• 4-8 Second Animation (via CGUploader)

Film Trailer:
• Rough Storyboards or 3D pre-visualization
• Edited storyboards or 3D pre-visualization
• Scratch Voice track and/or original footage
• Initial SFX and Music
• Colored Story Boards or edited footage/renders
• Color timed and finished storyboards/footage/renders
• Foley pass and final audio edit
• Finished Trailer (via CGUploader)


Video (with audio)

Video material must be submitted in 4:3 aspect with a maximum resolution of 640 x 480. If you wish to create 16:9 or other wide format films then you will need to letterbox them into the 4:3 format.

Download one of these and encode your video - Videos need to be encoded with a screen ratio of 4:3, common resolutions would be 640x480 or 320x240. The higher the bitrate you use the more space your animation will require. The CGChallenge Uploader is available here


Images

All image submissions must be in JPG or PNG format. The final image must be in both JPG (or PNG), and TIF format (at a print-resolution of no less than 300dpi).


Final Image Size

Your final image dimensions should be in print resolution (as large as you can possibly render). Do not send in a low-resolution placeholder and ask us to get back to you, as we won't.

A guideline is 2657 pixels wide and/or 3636 high, 300 DPI (portrait), or 3636 pixels wide and/or 2657 pixels high, 300 DPI (landscape). Your image aspect ratio and layout will dictate the final resolution. These are given as guidelines. To be safe, render images that are larger than these specified.

DO NOT up-sample your images to achieve higher resolution. If you cannot reach the desired full-page resolution, just send in what you have.

Information about the final file submission will be emailed to all contestants in the last month of the Challenge.


Copyright - Derivative Works

Greg Bear has granted CGSociety permission to base this challenge on his novel, EON. As EON is published work we need to be very clear regarding how copyright works in this situation.

When you have finished your work will be yours - you hold the Copyright for it as a derivative work, inspired by EON, a novel by Greg Bear. You will be free to show your finished work anywhere you want as long as it is in a non-commercial context and you include in the credit these words “inspired by EON, a novel by Greg Bear”. You cannot make any claim or imply in nay way that you created the work for Greg Bear and must not allow your work to appear in any form under ‘EON’ or ‘Greg Bear’ imprimatur.

As a derivate work you can not use your work in any commercial manner without gaining written permission from Greg Bear.

The arrangment is reciprocal. Greg Bear does not have any claim to your work other than being the inspiration for it. Should it be used by Greg Bear or the publishers of EON they are required to seek your permission to use your work.
